EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY OF OSTRACODA : ITS FUNDAMENTALS AND APPLICATIONS (DEVELOPMENTS IN PALAEONTOLOGY AND STRATIGRAPHY)

There are many competitive works on the market concerning evolutionary biology, but this volume is quite distinctive in its idiographic aspect focusing on Ostracoda viewed from a wide range of disciplines, ages and environments. The book deals with various lines of idiographic biology and palaeontology of Ostracoda and nomothetic trials focusing strongly on evolutionary biology. Particular themes are morphology, biology, evolution, speciation, ecology, palaeoecology, deep sea fauna, biogeography, palaeobiogeography, biostratigraphy and exploration, all concerning Ostracoda.

The last decade has witnessed a spectacular renewal of interest in the study of Otracoda, particularly in the evolutionary biology of Ostracoda, including speciation. Ostracoda are unique, ranging in age from the Cambrian period to modern times with carapaces ready to be preserved as fossils, providing various lines of invaluable evidence regarding evolutionary processes.

More than 120 participants from 20 countries assembled at the Ninth International Symposium on Ostracoda and this book is a collection of all the papers presented at the Symposium, plus selected papers submitted by non-attending members. It presents an outstanding record of much pioneering research and will be of interest to specalists in Ostracoda as well as all earth and life scientists concerned with evolution. Its value is further enhanced by easy-to-use indexes of authors, localities and taxa.

THE SOULS OF ANIMALS

June 1, 2007

Why do elephants bury their dead? What makes birds sing and cranes dance? Do animals appreciate art? Do they know the difference between right and wrong? Do they experience awe and wonder?
In this revised second edition of his celebrated book, Reverend Gary Kowalski combines heartwarming stories with solid science to show that other creatures are not insensitive objects devoid of feeling and intellect but thinking, sentient beings with an inward, spiritual life.

GOLD RUSH IN THE JUNGLE: THE RACE TO DISCOVER AND DEFEND THE RAREST ANIMALS OF VIETNAM'S "LOST WORLD"

April 16, 2013
An engrossing, adventure-filled account of the rush to discover and save Vietnam's most extraordinary animals

Deep in the jungle where the borders of Vietnam meet those of Laos and Cambodia is a region known as "the lost world." Large mammals never seen before by Western science have popped up frequently in these mountains in the last decade, including a half-goat/half-ox, a deer that barks, and a close relative of the nearly extinct Javan rhino. In an age when scientists are excited by discovering a new kind of tube worm, the thought of finding and naming a new large terrestrial mammal is astonishing, and wildlife biologists from all over the world are flocking to this dangerous region. The result is a race between preservation and destruction.

Containing research gathered from famous biologists, conservationists, indigenous peoples, former POWs, ex-Viet Cong, and the first U.S. ambassador to Vietnam since the war's end, Gold Rush in the Jungle goes deep into the valleys, hills, and hollows of Vietnam to explore the research, the international trade in endangered species, the lingering effects of Agent Orange, and the effort of a handful of biologists to save the world's rarest animals.

ONCE AND FUTURE GIANTS: WHAT ICE AGE EXTINCTIONS TELL US ABOUT THE FATE OF EARTH'S LARGEST ANIMALS

January 1, 1993 A Shearwater Book
In Last Animals at theZoo, Colin Tudge argues that zoos have become an essential part of modernconservation strategy, and that the only real hope for saving many endangeredspecies is through creative use of zoos in combination with restoration ofnatural habitats. From the genetics of captive breeding to techniques ofbehavioral enrichment, Tudge examines all aspects of zoo conservation programs and explains how the precarious existence of so many animals can best be protected.

THE FATE OF THE SPECIES: WHY THE HUMAN RACE MAY CAUSE ITS OWN EXTINCTION AND HOW WE CAN STOP IT

The sixth "mass extinction event" in the history of planet Earth is currently under way, with over two hundred species dying off every day. The cause of this seismic event is also the source of the single biggest threat to human life: our own inventions.
But for all our talk about sea levels and biotechnology, do we really know what our future will actually look like? Will our immune systems be attacked by so-called super bugs, always evolving, and more easily spread than ever? Will the disappearance of numerous species cripple the biosphere? And if it does, what happens then? In this provocative, gripping book, Scientific American editor Fred Guterl explores these and other looming scenarios in vivid detail—the way they might really happen—and then proffers the means to avoid them.
We find ourselves in a trap: Technology got us into this mess, and it’s also the only thing that can help us survive it. Guterl’s riveting book is a grand and necessary thought experiment, not merely a scary story, but a fresh perspective on the world we’re remaking, and a route to safe harbor.

EXTINCT!

Creatures started to go extinct long ago, in the far distant past going back to when the first dinosaurs made their appearance on the earth, some 230 million years ago in the Triassic Period; we can trace the evolution of these creatures from the fossil records which have been discovered in Argentina and Brazil. In 2012 scientists have succeeded in recreating dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus Rex or T-Rex using the latest laser beam technology resulting in a conclusion that they hunted in blood-thirsty packs. Why the dinosaurs along with numerous other creatures on Land, Sea, and Air disappeared is an ongoing study for the scientists. Various theories, such as sudden climate change, and volcanic eruptions, are suggested for their extinction. Another popular theory among some scientists is that an asteroid such as the one that struck the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, causing an enormous crater about 180 kilometres or 111 miles wide, would have caused dust to blot out the sunlight like the volcanic eruptions did, and causing extremely cold weather for months or years. So whether it was climate change that made the climate drier and colder, volcanic ash or an asteroid blotting out the sun effecting photosynthesis and the growth of plants, or a combination or all of them contributing to these creatures becoming extinct, is still open to debate. One thing that is certain is that interference by humans upon creatures living before about 4 million years ago, either by hunting, or interfering with the habitat of these creatures did not occur, simply because humans did not exist before this time. The effect that man has had on the creatures that existed on earth since his appearance, as well as efforts to protect existing species is also outlined in this book EXTINCT!

ANIMAL: THE DEFINITIVE VISUAL GUIDE

The natural world is a dynamic place and our understanding of it is forever growing and changing. Since Animal was first published in 2001, the African elephant has been reclassified into two species, a cat-sized rat has been discovered in Papua New Guinea, the only plant-eating spider has been found in Central America, a bird-eating fanged frog has been located in Vietnam, and more than 1,250 new species of amphibians have been identified.
Fully revised and updated to take into account the latest scientific discoveries and developments, more than fifty new species, and changes to the distribution, population numbers, and conservation status of many animal groups, Animal brings together the expertise of natural history specialists and outstanding wildlife photographers to illustrate, describe, and explain the incredible range of creatures in the animal kingdom.
